Enterprising Environmentalist

Brian Machovina earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at FIU and has made his mark on a variety of organizations and enterprises. He established a conservation group to protect rainforests, directed an environmental alliance advocating for coastal ecosystems, and co-invented a kitchen appliance and an exercise machine with fellow Panther alum Eileen McHale. He currently serves on the CASE Dean's Advisory Board.

Diatom Discoverer

Sylvia Lee, who holds a doctorate in biology from FIU, identified new species of diatom — single-celled algae — in the Everglades while working in the Aquatic Ecology Lab. She has also taught college and high school students about the ecology and systematics of diatoms.
