Explores how communication systems evolve. Takes an integrative approach, exploring communication at every level, from the ecological forces that drive natural selection, to the proteins that constitute the structures producing communication signals. Study organism is the South American electric fish.
Education

- Ph.D. Psychology, University of Washington, 1989
- Neural Systems & Behavior summer course, Marine Biological Laboratory, 1989
Research Interests
Animal communication from evolution to molecules, focusing on electric fish and songbirds (behavior, ecology, endocrinology, evolution, neurobiology, physiology).
