Call for Proposals
Graduate Student Research and Graduate Student Travel Support
The International Center for Tropical Botany (ICTB) requests proposals for up to $2000 each to support either (i) graduate student research projects, or (ii) graduate student travel, particularly for participation in research-related workshops or annual society meetings. Proposed projects should have clear links to tropical botany and should further the mission of the ICTB (ictb.fiu.edu). Research and/or travel that furthers collaborations with the National Tropical Botanical Garden will be given priority, but all types of proposals for work in or on tropical and subtropical environments are encouraged. Graduate students whose mentor does not belong to the ICTB but who work in tropical and subtropical environments (terrestrial and aquatic) are welcome to apply.
To submit a research proposal, provide a 1 page narrative describing your research project, including (i) background, (ii) research questions, (iii) expected results, and (iv) how the research supports the ICTB mission and objectives. On a separate page, provide (v) a budget, including other support received, and (vi) a brief budget justification. The proposal should begin with a title, followed by your name, your department and degree program, your mentor, and type of proposal (Research); this information can be on a separate cover page. Include a copy of your current CV (no more than two pages) with your proposal.
Travel proposals can be either for research purposes or for travel to a meeting. If you are also submitting a research proposal, the travel proposal should be for a different purpose (e.g., a meeting). Requests for travel to meetings can include costs of housing and registration, as well as per diem and travel.
To submit a travel proposal, provide a 1 page narrative describing the purpose of the travel and how the travel supports the ICTB mission and objectives. The proposal should begin with a title, followed by your name, your department and degree program, your mentor, and type of proposal (Travel). Include a copy of your current CV (no more than two pages) with your proposal.
Submit proposals by end of day, Sunday, Feb. 28. Proposals should be e-mailed to the Chairperson of the ICTB Academic Advisory Committee, Dr. Jennifer Richards (firstname.lastname@example.org ) and copied to the Director of the ICTB, Dr. Chris Baraloto (email@example.com). Begin the subject-line of your e-mail with your last name then initials, underscore, ICTB, underscore, type of proposal (Research or Travel), e.g., SmithAB_ICTB_Research.
Proposals will be evaluated by the Academic Advisory Committee of the ICTB, and results announced in April 2016. The ICTB plans to support at least 5 projects in each category. Funds will be made available in May 2016 and must be used and a final report submitted by January 2017. Recipients will be required to present a summary of their research in a Plant Talk seminar in the 2016-17 academic year; length of this talk is flexible (20 min to the full hour).
